Thunder Bay Alpine Club History?

Hi Alex:
To answer your questions:
1. Thunder Bay was officially recognized as a " Section" of The Alpine Club of Canada in October of 1984, following application to the ACC board of management in Feb of 1984 by Neil Gilson, our first chairman. (83/84). The Section went to sleep for a couple of years, from 86 to 89 and then was revived by Dr. Dave Robinson in 1989. We haven't looked back since.

As far as "being in charge", I have never been section Chairman, believing this was a task better suited for an energetic young spirit looking for opportunities to venture into the realm of a world class organization that is recognized internationally as the spirit of Canadian mountaineering (which means any activity related to the mountain environs), and a significant addition to the typical student CV. I've been the Section rep for quite a few years, which I see as the safety net, (belayer?) for anyone that wants to step out a bit in their ACC role. (Someone's gotta be around all year to answer to the many calls we get re climbing in the area, and to keep the national club apprised of the regional acivities/issues that are part of the national picture). I try to encourage any sectin member to get onto a project and "run with it". Did you see the list of possible project in our last newsletter?

2. The Film Fest came to Thunder Bay (The Laskin Bldg at LU) in 1992, largely through the efforts of section member Lindsey Brimblecombe. I've been organizing it ever since and in Jan, 2001, we expanded the film fest into the "Mountain Spirit Festival" to commemorate the 10th anniversary of our hosting of the event. We had Chick Scott and Barry Blanchard here for that weekend and they were both very impressed with the level of activity and commitment to climbing in this area. (Watch for an aticle in this years Film Fest program profiling our involovement with the Film Fest and our record setting attendance). Our event is used as THE model for how to present the Film Fest to an audience.
